WELCOME TO MICHELE CRAIG (TEAM MAGGIE)'S PAGE

by Team Co-founder Michele Griffin Craig

This is an AIDS story (sort of) but mostly a friendship story. Bear with me.

Maggie Kneip lived next door to me and my, roommate, Susan, in Chandler Hall at The College of William & Mary in 1974-1975. Maggie was (and is) beautiful, funny, talented, and kind. We all…Susan, suitemates, Carolyn and Suzanne, Bill, and I…loved the time we spent with her that year.

Fast forward. We lost touch until we reconnected at William & Mary homecomings in 2002 and 2012…and then on FB (yay! FB). We knew that Maggie’s husband had died when her children were very young but did not know details.

This year Maggie’s book, Now Everyone Will Know, was published. It is the story of Maggie’s marriage, her husband’s death to AIDS, and the years after when she felt like she had to keep the cause of her husband’s death a secret. 25 years ago I read Randy Shilts’ book about the AIDS epidemic, And the Band Played On. The story was heartbreaking, maddening, and a bit scary. Maggie’s story hits a little closer to home. How could this happen to her?

On May 15 Bill and I will join Maggie at AIDS Walk NY. Joanna, Maggie’s partner, Dave, our friends from Cleveland, David and Rosann, and others are also joining us. The money we raise will go to the Hyacinth AIDS Foundation in New Jersey. Hyacinth’s mission is “to help people live with HIV, slow the spread of the epidemic, and serve as a critical voice in the public debate surrounding AIDS in New Jersey.” Moreover, the Hyacinth Foundation is doing groundbreaking work supporting women, and their children, affected by AIDS. This is particularly important because, today, 1 in 4 people living in America diagnosed with HIV is a woman and an estimated 62% of those are African American.

Please join us in NY if possible, donate to our team, and read Maggie’s book. The story is not over. (Go to these links for more information on Maggie’s bookHyacinth Foundation, and CDC information on HIV/AIDs.
